Huntsville's pre-eminent spot for good food and great times began serving Huntsville, Walker County and surrounding areas August 23, 1993. That's when Cecil and Kerry Murray opened the doors to Murski's Ice House at 1229 Josey.
Cecil and Kerry originally envisioned an establishment that combined the qualities of a sports bar and a good old-fashioned Southeast Texas ice house. With that in mind, they decided to feature an outdoor deck to take advantage of Huntsville's mild climate; and included on the grounds a volleyball court, two horseshoe pits and several washer pits.
As Murski's business grew, the emphasis on outdoor activities decreased. The courts and pits were replaced by additional parking facilities. The deck, a unique feature among Huntsville eateries became increasingly popular, regularly hosting a wide cross-section of clientele.
In August 1996, Kerry purchased Cecil's share of the business, becoming Murski's sole proprietor.
Diners at Murski's enjoy a select variety of delicious choices. All entrees are prepared outdoors on a grill. Nothing is fried.
Murski's most popular menu item is the world-famous Hootieburger, a half-pound burger marinated to perfection with a secret recipe. The Hootieburger has been selected Huntsville's best burger four years in a row, in an annual survey conducted and published by The Huntsville Item.
The Hootieburger is named for Guinn Hugh "Hootie" Murray, Kerry's father. Hootie, an active member of the SHSU Letterman's Association, was a baseball All-American for the Bearkats during the early 60s, and later played professional baseball in the Houston Colt .45s organization.
Kerry is a member of the board of directors of the SHSU Bearkat club, and is an avid supporter of all Sam Houston athletic programs. He also offers support, through donations and through hosting social events, for numerous other SHSU organizations. A 1993 graduate of SHSU, Kerry proudly lends his time and efforts to such worthwhile endeavors as SHSU rugby, agribusiness, and Greeks, just to name a few.
In addition to Hootieburgers, diners at Murski's enjoy grilled chicken sandwiches, grilled chicken salads, sausage wraps and Thursday through Saturday nights, Murski's features Huntsville's best steaks.
